Children are ready if they are healthy, can handle their personal
needs, and have the necessary social and learning skills. Children
are ready when they are able to
Personal Needs
- Tie their shoes, take their coats on and off, and snap,
button, zip and belt pant or skirts.
- Use the bathroom and wash their hands.
- Use silverware and eat without help.
Social Skills
- Puts away toys and belongings when asked to do so.
- Follow two-step directions.
- Get along other children; wait their turn, work with others,
and share.
- Sit still for up to 10 minutes.
- Follow rules.
- Have a healthy feeling of self-worth and positive feelings
of self and of others (can-do attitude).
Learning Needs
- Tell their names, addresses, phone numbers and ages.
- Hold a book and turn pages from front to back.
- Sit and listen to a story.
- Tell stories and rhymes.
- Sing songs.
Health Needs
Children must also have
- Gotten dental check-ups
- Eaten at regular times on a daily basis
- Had required immunizations and medical care
- Learned to run, jump, skip, climb, swing, use balls
