Be ready for the first day of school

Being ready for school means more than the ABCs. You want to make the most of the summer months with fun learning activities. You will have to register your child and make certain that the child has all the necessary paperwork paperwork and immunizations. Because your child is new to school, you want to have a routine at home that will help him or her adjust and you want to make certain that your child is ready mentally, physically and socially. Finally, you need to be ready.

Is Your Child Ready?

Children are ready if they are healthy, can handle their personal needs, and have the necessary social and learning skills. Children are ready when they are able to

Personal Needs

  • Tie their shoes, take their coats on and off, and snap, button, zip and belt pant or skirts.
  • Use the bathroom and wash their hands.
  • Use silverware and eat without help.

Social Skills

  • Puts away toys and belongings when asked to do so.
  • Follow two-step directions.
  • Get along other children; wait their turn, work with others, and share.
  • Sit still for up to 10 minutes.
  • Follow rules.
  • Have a healthy feeling of self-worth and positive feelings of self and of others (can-do attitude).

Learning Needs

  • Tell their names, addresses, phone numbers and ages.
  • Hold a book and turn pages from front to back.
  • Sit and listen to a story.
  • Tell stories and rhymes.
  • Sing songs.

Health Needs

Children must also have

  • Gotten dental check-ups
  • Eaten at regular times on a daily basis
  • Had required immunizations and medical care
  • Learned to run, jump, skip, climb, swing, use balls

 

 

 

What You Should Know Before Your Child Starts School or Kindergarten

  • When to register for kindergarten.
  • What registration forms to fill out.
  • Your child’s kindergarten teacher’s name (once assigned).
  • What immunizations are required.
  • A description of the kindergarten program.
  • The kindergarten schedule and a daily schedule.
  • Transportation procedures.
  • Food service arrangements.
  • Ways to become more involved in your child’s education and the school.
