We help child care providers and early childhood educators do their jobs better

A child's first formal school experience—in preschool or day care—can set the precedent for lifelong learning. Our programs support early childhood educators and child care providers through training and networking.

Professional Development

Training

In partnership with Northeastern Technical College (NETC), we train and mentor child care providers in special sessions, using trainers registered or certified through the Center for Child Care Career Development. Participants receive Continuing Education Units (CEU) as well as bonus educational materials.

ExCEL: Excellence in Care and Early Learning

ExCEL provides certified training for child care directors and workers, on-side mentoring and technical assistance, high-quality learning materials and developmental screening for all children in six child care centers:

  • Tiggerland Child Care, Cheraw
  • Sunshine Daycare, Cheraw
  • Ruby Headstart, Ruby

Chesterfield County child care Directors Networking Forum

Through our coordination, child care directors now have a networking forum in order to share information and ideas and to receive training and support.

Quality Enhancement Grants

Mini-grants of up to $8,000 are awarded to child care organizations to purchase age-appropriate educational materials for the children in their care.

Child Care Expansion
Grants

With a critical need for more access to child care, especially in the western part of Chesterfield County, these grants will be awarded to help a new or existing child care facility serve more children and enhance educational quality.

TEACH Scholarships

TEACH (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps Early Childhood Project) provides scholarships for teachers working in child care to complete college coursework in early childhood education—often enabling them to increase their compensation. TEACH is jointly managed by First Steps and DSS through the Center for Child Care Career Development in Greenville.

Applications are available through Chesterfield County First Steps or at Northeastern Tech.
